PORTLAND, Ore. – Paragon BioTeck, Inc., a privately held pharmaceutical and medical device company, announced today a call for applications for the 2016 Koch Kellan Scholarship, which is awarded to a deserving full-time doctoral candidate in ophthalmology. Application and guidelines will be available at kochkellan.com from November 1, 2015, through February 1, 2016. The scholarship is intended to support a strong candidate pursuing a clinical, teaching, or research career in ophthalmology. The scholarship is part of Paragon Gives, the philanthropic arm of Paragon BioTeck.

Finalist applications will be reviewed by Paul S. Koch, MD, and Robert E. Kellan, MD, and the Paragon BioTeck, Inc. Scientific Advisory Board. The 2016 Koch Kellan Scholar will be flown to the 2016 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meeting, where he or she will participate in Paragon’s onsite activities. The Scholar will be formally honored during a ceremony at Paragon’s Scientific Advisory Board Meeting at ASCRS.

“We are pleased and honored to continue this Paragon Gives endeavor. The eye care community is close knit with a long legacy of mentorship in our field. This scholarship continues that tradition as we champion the rising generation of ophthalmic scholars,” said Patrick H. Witham, President and CEO of Paragon. “When we advocate our future ophthalmic innovators, we are also affirming our commitment to elevate the standard of eye care and enhance patient quality of life.”

The 2015 Koch Kellan Scholarship was awarded to Captain Edward Woodward, a former standout Air Force pilot and Tillman Military Scholar. Woodward currently attends University of South Florida’s (USF) Morsani School of Medicine, where he is pursuing a Doctor of Medicine. Woodward was medically retired from the Air Force after sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during inflight training just five flights short of graduation.
